This has been in the news for a week or two now, but just in case you haven't heard:Standardized tests in the U.S. indicate that girls now score just as well as boys in math. (sciencemag.org)
So I guess that's one more gender stereotype broken.

Love me some gender stereotype busting!!
Hey! I learned about something about that in social psych. There was this study done, I don't remember the specifics, but in one group this math test was given to males and females, and nothing was said before it, and they performed equally. In the other group, the people were told before hand something about research to see if males are better at math, and then the females performed significantly lower. So, the point was that females are primed, and then live up...(well, more of "living down") to those expectations, like a self-fulfilling prophecy, I guess, and an illusory correlation, but it wasn't called that. It's killing me that I can't remember, and I can't find it in my notes..I actually got them out because it's bothering me that I can't recall it. Oh, I'm such a nerd and never throw away notes from most classes.
beth - me too!
I can stand on my head - such an interesting study!!
