If you have young people in your life...

Teach them to ask questions about the images they see in the media:

1. What are they trying to get me to buy?

2. What values are they trying to sell me?

3. How are they trying to make me feel?

I think this is actually becoming part of curriculum at schools. I remember in 8th grade language arts learning about the different advertising approaches and then looking through magazines finding examples of them, and themes running throughout them, and messages being sent, and then we had to make our own. I don't really know if all schools do that. Plus I was in honors/advanced classes so we always did different stuff, so I don't know if all kids get that. Personally, I really enjoyed it, and I think it's important.

thanks for the comment. I think it would be awesome if all schools would teach this! but sadly, none of my clients seem to have learned it.... school or otherwise.
